The Joburg Lady

My husband and I have been in the process of moving from Dubai to Australia. We stopped over for what was supposed to be a three week holiday in South Africa to visit family. However because our visas didn't come through quite as early as expected, our time in Joburg was happily extended by six weeks. At first frustrating, as we didn't have any idea when we would suddenly have to pack up and fly off, but after a while we settled into family life and enjoyed working on a few little creative projects.
Here is the process of a painting I did while in Joeys.

Underpainting: a light purple colour with reference image.

First step: sketch and backround.

First primary - ultramarine blue lowlights.

A bit of warm (cadmium) red.

Added the last of the primary's (yellow) and then some more lowlights and highlights, touches of light blues and pinks.

More skin detail and bold colour.

Eyes and mouth properly placed, nose still needs work.

Almost done, hat slightly unfinished.

Final touch - signature.
